2026 Chess Olympiad: India brings 'golden generation' to Samarkand, Uzbekistan faces a historic opportunity

Samarkand, the Silk Road city, is about to become the meeting point of nearly two hundred chess teams from around the world. FIDE has announced the schedule for the 46th Chess Olympiad, set for September 2026. India enter as defending champions in both the Open and Women's sections. The Open team includes world champion Gukesh D, Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, Nihal Sarin and Vidit Gujrathi. The Women's team features Humpy Koneru, Divya Deshmukh, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Vantika Agrawal and Savitha Shri. Praggnanandhaa recently overtook Erigaisi as India's number one and returned to the world top ten. Uzbekistan, the host nation, have Javokhir Sindarov as their leader. Sindarov is also set to challenge Gukesh for the World Championship after the Olympiad. Playing at home gives Uzbekistan a real edge, while India face the pressure of defending their title away from home. The schedule includes six consecutive rounds, a rest day, then five more rounds. The final round starts at 11am to allow the closing ceremony. This could affect players who prefer afternoon games. The chessboard never lies; only we deceive ourselves with applause.
