South African law graduates now have a chance to train as prosecutors. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is offering a 12-month paid training programme in 2026. The programme helps final-year and qualified LLB graduates get courtroom experience.
The training is full-time and includes formal assessments during the year. Those who pass may be considered for permanent roles across South Africa. Salaries range from R252,855 to R292,596 per year.
What is the NPA Aspirant Prosecutor Programme?
The programme gives law graduates the chance to learn directly from prosecutors. Candidates handle real cases, attend court, and complete legal tasks. This helps them gain practical skills in criminal law and court procedures.
They are assessed regularly throughout the year. If they show they can work independently and fairly, they might get a permanent role. But placement is not guaranteed and depends on availability.

Where Are the Posts Located?
The NPA will appoint 100 aspirants in 2026. Some of the centres include Johannesburg, Polokwane, Mthatha, Randburg, Kimberley, Bellville, and Welkom. Candidates can be placed at any NPA office nationwide after training.
The training starts on 1 March 2026, and no late start will be allowed.
Who Can Apply?
The opportunity is open to South Africans who are in their final LLB year or already qualified. Even those working in the Department of Justice or NPA may apply if they meet the requirements. Applicants must not have done Practical Vocational Training before.
Training Expectations
This is not just a learning programme. Trainees are expected to follow the NPA Code of Conduct and attend all sessions. A written contract will outline the responsibilities. An entry exam is required as part of the selection process.
Those who decline permanent placement after training will have their contract ended.
